About us
Coin Street is a social enterprise located on London’s iconic Southbank. Established in 1984, our 13-acre site is at the heart of a thriving neighbourhood with co-operative homes, parks and gardens, shops and design studios, galleries, restaurants, a family and children’s centre, sports pitches, and a range of community programmes and activities.
Coin Street is overseen by three independent organisations working together: Coin Street Community Builders (CSCB), Coin Street Secondary Housing Co-operative (CSS) and Coin Street Centre Trust (CSCT). These organisations are governed by voluntary boards, made up of members from the local community and experts from a range of sectors. All three organisations are served by a single staff team, employed by CSCB. Coin Street’s vision is one where diverse groups of people come together to live, work and play. We generate around 75% of our income from commercial activity and reinvest the majority of those funds back into our community.
At Coin Street, we believe in finding better ways of doing things by focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems. We respect and listen to different perspectives, knowing that by working together we can learn, grow, and achieve more. We also hold ourselves to a high standard of commitment, doing what we say we will and always striving to deliver our best.
Coin Street is a social enterprise rooted in the heart of Waterloo and North Southwark. Since 1984, we’ve transformed a once-neglected riverside site into a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive neighbourhood. Our community is now home to affordable housing, public spaces, local businesses, and opportunities for people of all ages to thrive. We believe a strong neighbourhood offers more than just the basics, it should be a place where people feel safe, happy, healthy, and connected.
We support a mixed-use model that embraces variety in both economy and community. Our aim is to foster an environment where individuals can build confidence, develop skills, and feel they belong. This includes providing places where creativity flourishes, job opportunities are plentiful, quality homes and green spaces are standard, and where both simple daily needs and cultural experiences are within easy reach.
Change is a part of London’s DNA, and we’ve always embraced it to strengthen and improve our local area. That’s why we focus on collaboration, working with people who share our values and believe in unlocking the potential of individuals and communities.
Through our work, we provide high-quality early years education and family support, maintain community spaces for living, working and leisure, and create opportunities that allow people to lead their own initiatives. Whether it’s a parent joining a childcare programme, a local resident starting a business, or a neighbour participating in a creative project, our goal is to provide the tools and spaces for people to shape their own futures.
Finances
Funding Coin Street Community Builders has a wide range of income-generating activities. These include: rent and service charges from a wide range of leased properties including restaurants, shops and designer-maker studios; charges for site and venue hire including a successful conference and events business; fees for services, including those provided by the nursery and family and children’s centre, grant income.
To safeguard its independence, Coin Street has always sought to avoid reliance on public sector contracts and revenue grant income. Our only public sector contract is in respect of family support and represents less than 2% of turnover.
