About us
The Fawcett Society is the UK’s leading membership charity campaigning for gender equality and women’s rights at work, at home and in public life. Our vision is a society in which women and girls in all their diversity are equal and truly free to fulfil their potential creating a stronger, happier, better future for us all. We’ve been advancing women’s equality since 1866 when at just 19, Millicent Fawcett collected signatures on a petition for women’s votes. She went on to lead the constitutional suffrage campaign and made this cause her lifetime’s work, securing equal voting rights 62 years later.
Today we continue her legacy with public advocacy, clearly defined goals and national campaigns which shape the debate and drive change, all made possible with the support of our committed members.
Our vision
A society in which women and girls in all their diversity are equal and truly free to fulfil their potential creating a stronger, happier, better future for us all.
Our mission
We won’t rest until all women have equality.
We are the UK’s only member-powered organisation working to end sexism and misogyny in all its forms.
Our research and advocacy puts women's voices and needs front and centre to persuade the powerful.
We build community, bringing women and men together to maximise the power of our movement.
Together, we generate change to create a feminist future for everyone.
Our values
Inclusive. We are for women, and for everyone. We welcome all of you to join us in our fight.
Feminist. We are fierce, fearless and feminist.
Anti-racist. We fight against all forms of racism. We hold ourselves accountable and acknowledge that we are always learning.
Evidence-based. Women and girls’ experiences shape everything we do, and our research is practical and rigorous.
Joyful. We celebrate the bravery and strength of women.
Collaborative. We lead from the front and take pride in partnering with other organisations to advance equality. By sharing our platform with others, we amplify all women’s voices. We encourage men to join and play their part in ending sexism.
Impactful. Impact matters to us. We use our influence to demand change at every level, and we see results.
Strategic Themes
Every woman has experienced misogyny, whether they realise it or not. It has, through history, been entrenched in society, shaping women’s lives, and now we face new and resurgent form of misogynistic backlash. Fawcett must be part of a strong women’s movement to resist and challenge these narratives.
We will prioritise intersectionality across all Fawcett’s themes. We commit to becoming actively anti-racist and embedding that in all our work. We cannot truly build solidarity without seeing, valuing and lifting up our diverse and specific experiences.
Our chosen topics present opportunities to focus on both shifting cultural attitudes in society, and shaping specific policies to make tangible systemic change to improve the lives of women. They are central to building a feminist future
Revolutionising Work
Workplaces work for women. Men are equal contributors to unpaid labour. Women are evaluated on equal terms. An end to attitudes that dismiss, denigrate and undervalue women's work
Creating Feminist AI
AI is created with and by women as equal partners. We benefit from the jobs and economic opportunities it can offer. Policy makers and the public understand the role of AI in shaping misogynistic and racist attitudes and together we resist that. We harness the power of AI to create a more equal economy and reverse deep-rooted inequality. All women are able to consume and use AI as informed consumers.
Demanding Safety and Dignity in Public Services
Services and institutions are created and designed with women's needs, priorities and experiences at the heart. Our wellbeing and our distress is recognised and taken seriously. Our voices are core to political processes that shape all our lives.
A joyful and powerful Fawcett in a thriving feminist community
Fawcett will build our strength and resilience through diverse income streams. We will grow and diversify our membership to ensure we are truly connected to all women’s lives and as a community we are mobilising our resources to achieve change. We will create ways for men to be active supporters in the fight against sexism. We will centre women’s voices, stories and lived experiences, our work must resonate with and move women – creating a sense of recognition and making it clear we are not alone when we resist sexism and discrimination.
