Role description

Chief Executive Officer

Salary: Circa £90,000

Location: London

Reporting to: Chair

Direct Reports: Director, Education, Impact and Partnerships, Director of Operations, Director of Development (vacant)

Purpose of the role

To inspire and lead our team; build and expand on our current successes to ensure we work with many more young people and schools across the UK; communicate with and engage with partners to drive forward the next chapter of our organisation. Lead the next phase of our development and growth, guiding us as we mark the centenary of Anne Frank’s birth, and shaping the next generation of advocates for a more tolerant society.


Key responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Vision

  • Lead the organisation in fulfilling its mission to educate young people about prejudice, tolerance and equity with a specific focus on the legacy of Anne Frank.

  • Work closely with the Board and senior leadership team to develop and implement our next strategy, ensuring the Trust’s continued relevance, increased impact and financial sustainability.

  • Expand the Anne Frank Trust’s funding base and develop new donor relationships.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships within the Jewish and broader communities.

  • Ensure the Trust’s governance remains transparent, accountable, and responsive.

Governance, Safeguarding, and Compliance

  • Work openly and effectively with the Chair and the Board, providing regular updates and supporting Board and committee meetings.

  • Ensure the Charity adheres to all legal and regulatory requirements, including Charity Commission requirements.

  • Uphold strong safeguarding standards, ensuring everyone involved feels and is kept safe.

  • Identify risks and implement measures to manage and mitigate these.

Fundraising and Financial Sustainability

  • Oversee the Trust’s fundraising activities, with a particular focus on major donors and corporate partnerships, leveraging existing relationships and expanding donor outreach.

  • Work closely with the Board and the Director of Development to lead fundraising efforts and build upon recent successes.

Relationship Building and External Affairs

  • Foster and deepen relationships with key stakeholders including schools, education organisations and others operating in a similar space.

  • Engage with the media and external platforms to raise the profile and raise awareness of the Anne Frank Trust’s work and impact.

  • Leverage strategic relationships with key organisations (e.g., Anne Frank House, Anne Frank Fonds, schools, government).

Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead and empower the senior leadership team, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary resources and support to succeed in their respective roles.

  • Foster a positive organisational culture focused on inclusivity, strategic thinking, and results.

  • Oversee the recruitment and development of key personnel, ensuring that they align with the Trust’s long-term strategic goals.


Person specification

Experience and Expertise

  • Proven track record in a senior leadership role, ideally within a charitable or educational organisation.

  • Strong empathy for the challenges facing diverse communities, particularly those impacted by antisemitism, racism, Islamophobia and other forms of discrimination.

  • Experience in building strategic relationships with key stakeholders and external partners, and proven experience of securing significant donations.

  • Ability to manage and empower a senior leadership team, ensuring alignment with the organisation’s strategic goals and fostering a positive culture.

Sector Knowledge and Understanding

  • A sympathetic understanding of educational issues especially in the context of tolerance building and youth empowerment.

  • An empathy with the Jewish Community, its history, and its role in tackling prejudice, alongside experience of working with diverse communities.

  • Knowledge of the Holocaust, Anne Frank and the Trust’s work is highly desirable with the ability to represent the Trust as a credible voice within this space.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong leadership and decision-making capabilities, with the ability to set strategic direction and drive organisational growth.

  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage credibly with stakeholders.

  • High level of diplomacy, emotional intelligence, and cultural sensitivity to work effectively with diverse groups and foster inclusivity.

  • Excellent financial acumen, with a proven ability to manage budgets, analyse financial information, and lead fundraising efforts.

  • Willingness to be hands-on and operational, when necessary, while also being able to delegate and empower others to lead key areas of work.
